Building Literacy Workshop
Time Sensitive: Open to those districts signing MOUs for 2025-26 (only 16 seats available)
“Building” Literacy: Integration of LEGO Spike Essentials with Reading Remediation
Who: 2nd-4th Grade teachers (in partnering LEAs) working with students in literacy/reading remediation (Led by early literacy expert: Mia Johnson!)
What: Participants will receive instruction and practice to integrate LEGO Essentials kits/engineering with Literacy
When: July 29th, 2025 9:00-4:00 (6 contact hours-with certificate)
Where: Hickory City Schools PD Lab– 151 25th Street SW, Hickory
Why:

Students excel when engaged in learning! LEGOs can do that when text is related to builds and problem solving.

Build a network of educators doing similar exciting work

Each participant will receive 3 LEGO Spike Essentials kits (can be used with 6-12 students in small groups)
Expectations:

Fully engage in PD
-
Agree to implement at least 10 lessons in reading or reading remediation instruction.

Complete survey at the end of year for feedback to improve programming and support.

Polar STEAM Application Now Open
Polar STEAM is recruiting educators for 2026/27 collaborations with polar researchers in creating educational resources about polar regions and science. Applications are open for Arctic and Antarctic deployments as well as virtual collaborations in both regions. This opportunity is open to community college and minority serving institution faculty, middle and high school educators, and informal educators. Apply by August 8, 2025.

This session will be lead by Scott Mann:
Scott is a lifelong learner. He graduated from Texas A&M University and served with Peace Corps Panama before returning to pursue a career as a bilingual educator both in rural and urban school districts. While teaching in public schools, Scott also led STEAM based summer camps, held community language classes, mentored university students, and delivered professional development to parents, community members, and other educators. As Director of Education for VentureLab, Scott has worked with educators, and institutions to bring entrepreneurial learning to their own practice and make an impact on the youth they serve.

NGCP and Smart Girls HQ are recruiting STEM programs to participate in Brite 2025! Brite is an online STEAM program for self-identifying girls entering 7th-10th grade.
Dates and Times: Monday, July 21st through Friday, July 25th from: 9 AM -12 PM PT / 12-3 PM ET.

We have received a generous grant to allow programs to participate at no cost! Participating programs will receive access to a customized online platform, educator guide and online training, Zoom meeting room, and a $100 gift card.

The theme is Explore STEAM: Creativity and Curiosity. Girls will engage in icebreakers, hands-on activities, and meet four role fabulous models: Beata Mierzwa, Molecular Biologist and Science Artist; Caeley Looney, Aerospace Engineer and CEO & Editor in Chief, Reinvented Magazine; Safoura Seddighin, Co-Founder, Fabinnov FabLab, and Jessica Hua, Ecologist and Science Communicator. Brite will spark curiosity and creativity, all while having fun doing STEAM projects and meeting STEAM professionals
The Brite team will facilitate live role model talks and a project showcase on Zoom and provide platform and technical support. Educators from participating programs are responsible for facilitating icebreakers and hands-on activities for their group on Zoom or in person. (The program is designed to increase STEM interest for girls and boys are welcome.)
