April 1st, 2023–STEM Trek 2023, a NC Science Festival event to be hosted by the Catawba Science Center and sponsored by the Greater Hickory International Council. This community event is free, and all families are welcome!

STEM West is reaching out to different educators at your school (i.e., media and technology specialists, science and CTE teachers) whom we thought might be interested in a technology professional development program offered in your region this spring. The program called Programmed Robotics in the School Makerspace (PRISM) is funded by Burroughs-Wellcome’s Student Science Enrichment Program (SSEP) with a goal of seeding new STEM/Maker clubs into area schools with an initial focus on programmable robotics (Cubelets and Sphero RVR).

Target schools: Middle and High schools in Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, and Catawba Counties

Benefits:

  • Stipend funded PD in robotics: $200/day for 2 days=$400

  • Stipends for club meetings and all required surveys/documentation completed: $50/meeting for 10 meetings= $500

  • 4 Sphero RVRs and 4 Cubelets sets for your club/school

  • Bus/Driver for Field Trip in April for student presentations/field trip ($800 provided by grant to cover costs for each school)

  • Certificate for digital CEUs for 2 days/12 hours of PD

Expectations:

  • Attend and actively participate in 2-full day Saturday training sessions (9-3) on January 14th & February 18th at CVCC

  • Sponsor AT LEAST 10 club meetings before/during/after school for AT LEAST 10 students in the spring 2023

  • Bring students on a field trip so they can showcase their learning and proposals to meet the designated challenge/PBL. Location will be in Burke County for the week of April 24th, tentatively.

  • Attend a summer session/PD for updates and extended support for continuation of program

  • Complete all surveys and documentation for grant and evaluation process

Invite Your Students to Join an eCYBERMISSION Team
Have your students form teams and register to compete in eCYBERMISSION. As they collaborate to identify a problem in their community and use scientific inquiry or engineering design to propose solutions, they’ll also develop the soft skills needed for success in the workplace.
