This career chat is an interactive conversation perfect for older youth. We’ll help demystify high-tech industries and explore various career pathways in STEM.

Led by our own teen Flight Crew member Shireen from Arizona, youth will have the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of:

  • Karina Moreno, a biotech engineer and process development engineer at Illumina, an international biotech company.
  • Lori Seuch, chief information officer at Massachusetts Educational Financing Authority (MEFA), a quasi-state authority located in Boston, Massachusetts.

  • Brittany Wheeler, D. Eng., associate director of manufacturing and Operations at RTX, an aerospace company.

  • Jennifer Lemon, an engineer at BAE Systems, an aerospace company.

This event will be recorded and shared with all registrants, so you are welcome to register and participate as a group live or view it after the event. We also appreciate sharing the opportunity directly with educators, teens and families!

Sincerely,

The STEM Next Events Team

Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22nd. Try out one of these great activities to celebrate!

Solar

Solar Oven Challenge

Build a solar oven using NEED’s directions, or design your own. Use your solar oven to bake a favorite snack, or simply see how much temperature change you can create.

Make a video sharing your solar oven design. Were you able to successfully cook your food? How did your food taste? Are there any design changes you would make?

UV Beaded Solar Chameleon

The sun provides us with energy. This energy comes to Earth in a few different ways: visible light we can see, infrared radiation you can feel as heat, and UV radiation that cannot be seen or felt.

This activity has students build a UV beaded solar chameleon and create a habitat for their chameleon.

A literary extension to this activity is to read a A Color of Their Own, by Leo Lionni and to compare and contrast the story to real chameleons.

PDF Activity Directions.

Candy Collector

A fun, quick game to introduce students to the terms “renewable” and “nonrenewable”, Candy Collector provides a closer look at how long energy sources will last using only nonrenewable resources, and when incorporating renewable energy resources.

Found in NEED’s Energy Games & Icebreakers Guide!

Biomass in a Bag

NEED Curriculum Director, Emily Hawbaker, demonstrates a “Biomass in a Bag” lesson.
